Darts star injures himself while trying on a T-shirt

Darts star Michael van Gerwen missed the Premier League stop in Berlin for a particularly strange reason.

The Dutchman injured his neck on match day while trying on a T-shirt for his sponsors, as his friend and fellow professional Vincent van der Voort recounted in the podcast "Darts Draait Door." "He immediately said something was wrong. He could barely move his neck," reported van der Voort.

The PDC cited a shoulder injury as the reason for van Gerwen's spontaneous withdrawal last Thursday. The 35-year-old van Gerwen missed not only the matchday in Berlin, but also the following European Tour weekend in Riesa. "He was stiff, barely said a word—that's not typical of him," said van der Voort.

“It just didn’t work”

The two Dutchmen traveled home from Berlin that evening. After the failed T-shirt fitting, Van Gerwen immediately had a massage and consulted a physiotherapist. But the pain persisted. "He desperately wanted to play, but it just wasn't possible," said van der Voort. Van Gerwen lost valuable points in the lucrative Premier League in the race for the four playoff spots.
