European Frisbee Championship: A South Tyrolean is there

A great success for SSV Bozen and its Ultimate section: David Gruber, player and coach of the Bozen Frisbee team, has been selected for the Italian national team for the European Masters Ultimate Championships (EMUC 2025).

The international tournament will take place from July 16 to 20 in Lund (Sweden) and will bring together Europe's best Ultimate players in the age categories Masters (33+), Grandmasters (40+) and Great-Grandmasters (49+).

Gruber will compete in the Masters category and represent Italy against 11 other European teams, including France, Poland and Ireland.

Ultimate Frisbee is a running-intensive team sport with a flying disc that operates entirely without referees. Fouls and rule violations are addressed by the players themselves – this requires self-responsibility, strong communication skills, and respect. This is precisely what the "spirit of the game" stands for: a code of fair play that values ​​not only sportsmanship but also team spirit, fairness, and integrity. These values ​​make ultimate a unique and rapidly growing sport worldwide.

In addition to his role as a player, Gruber also serves as the EMUC Spirit Captain. In this role, he is the contact person for his own and opposing teams regarding issues of fairness, communication, and conflict resolution.

David Gruber: A pioneer in South Tyrol

Gruber discovered Ultimate Frisbee while studying in Munich and brought the sport to South Tyrol in 2014. Together with Marco Dalla Riva, he founded the first, and to date only, South Tyrolean Ultimate team, which today operates under the name GOATS Ultimate Bozen as a section of SSV Bozen, which, with its broad youth and club sports program, is also opening up to new disciplines like Ultimate.

The "Bolzano Goats" train twice a week and participate in tournaments in Italy and abroad. Gruber is not only a player but also a coach of the team.
