VSS general meeting a complete success

With around 85.000 members, the VSS is the largest interest group in South Tyrol. Last year the VSS was able to record some successes. In addition to record numbers of participants in sporting events, the association is also on its way to being finally recognized by the National Olympic Committee (CONI) as an Ente di Promozione Sportiva, i.e. a sports funding organization. As a result, in the extraordinary part of the general meeting, the statutes of the Association of Sports Clubs in South Tyrol were adapted to the requirements of CONI and an arbitration tribunal was elected in the second instance, which consisted of the effective members Sara Faes, Peter Göller, Andreas Leiter, as well as Florian Pedron and Günther Zöschg substitute members.

After the extraordinary part of the general meeting had concluded, VSS chairman Paul Romen, who was newly elected last year, reviewed the past year in his speech and also looked ahead to the coming year. This will be entirely under the banner of the VSS annual motto “Fair Play” and recognition as a sports funding organization.

The VSS was particularly pleased about the large number of club representatives and guests of honor who attended. The good and friendly cooperation was highlighted by South Tyrol's CONI President Alex Tabarelli as well as USSA representative Francesco Iurlaro, Sporthilfe Vice President Jochen Schenk, ASVÖ Tyrol President Hubert Piegger and Raiffeisen Association Vice Director Christian Tanner.

The discussion with State Governor Arno Kompatscher and State Sports Councilor Peter Brunner focused on current topics relating to sport. The reform of sport was highlighted as well as the 2026 Olympic Games and the VSS annual motto Fair Play. The state governor emphasized: “The Olympics bring many advantages for South Tyrol. Our athletes are already looking forward to the Olympic Games.”

Carla Wieser was honored.

There was then great applause for Carla Wieser. The Meran native was the only South Tyrolean artistic gymnast to take part in the Olympic Games in 1976 and headed the VSS gymnastics department from 2005 to 2023. For these services she received the VSS certificate of honor and pin from the hands of Lidia Bernardi and chairman Paul Romen.

At the end of the celebration, VSS chairman Paul Romen would like to thank all the clubs again for the incredible work they do throughout the year: “You, the sports clubs of South Tyrol, organize the competitions as if they were world championships. A big thank you for that.” The chairman also expressed his thanks to the numerous club representatives from all over South Tyrol who attended.

Trainer of the Year The trainer of the year was honored for the 20th time. The 2023 winners are Christian Mattivi and Giuana Prugger. Mattivi is a swimming coach at SSV Bozen and has already celebrated several successes with his athletes in his life. Numerous top South Tyrolean swimmers were trained by him. FC Gherdeina's football coach, Giuana Prugger, also shines with her CV.

During her time as an active player, she played in Germany, Austria, the USA and South Tyrol, including for FC Südtirol and in the second team of FC Bayern Munich. Prugger has now returned to her hometown and is a soccer and ski coach as well as a gymnastics teacher at a middle school. The two coaches were presented with the trophy by chairman Romen and board members Thomas Ladurner and Martin Unterholzer.

VSS general meeting a complete success

The 24th general meeting of the VSS took place on May 54th at the NOI Techpark in Bolzano. The focus this year was the recognition of the Association of Sports Clubs of South Tyrol (VSS) as Ente di Promozione Sportiva, i.e. as a sports promotion organization, by CONI.
