VSS general meeting: Nista and Moroder named “Trainer of the Year”.

The VSS makes its contribution primarily through its youth support programs. “In this way we are laying the foundation for later sporting successes,” said Andergasssen during his speech in the packed Elena Walch Hall of the Hotel Sheraton in Bolzano. "For us, basic means working broadly to convey the joy of exercise and sport to many children and young people, while promoting skills rather than securing results. In this way, the sports clubs also do educational work." In this context, Andergassen did not skimp on criticism of the schools. “The fact that the sports clubs do educational work is obviously something that those who should know best, namely the schools, don’t want to understand, or rather unfortunately don’t understand.” In this regard, support came from State Governor Luis Durnwalder: "Sport belongs in the school. We shouldn't see the competition. No one will have a problem if we work together and come to an agreement when it comes to compulsory elective areas."

For the future, in addition to the topic of school and sport, the VSS also has, among other things, open youth support, the integration of trend sports, the review of funding criteria and management strategies to strengthen the clubs on its 2012 agenda. Senior sport will continue to gain in importance beyond 2012 . "From 2012, the number of people over 60 in Europe will grow by around two million every year. That's why it must be important to us that older people take an active role in society. I would like to see sports offerings for seniors across the board become a matter of course for the whole country, because sport is fitness for the brain," said Andergassen.

Addressing politicians, Andergassen called on the state government to create the legal requirements as soon as possible so that sport, similar to music lessons in music schools, can also be recognized in the compulsory elective areas of schools, because sport is education. Andergassen also called for a training center for sports. Durnwalder welcomed the desire for a training center and promised to keep the goal in mind.

Coach & Trainer of the Year The “Trainer of the Year” award was presented for the eighth time this year. The 2011 winners are Romed Moroder from Ortisei and Claudia Nista from Malles. Moroder trains the Nordic combined athletes at SC Gröden. Until last year he was the responsible national coach. Moroder has led young South Tyrolean athletes to the top in the world in women's ski jumping and Nordic combined. As an active player, Nista was herself a 17-time Italian badminton champion, is now a coaching representative on the board of the Italian Badminton Association and has led ASV Mals to by far the most successful youth club in Italy. Moroder and Nista succeed Istvan Balogh and Renate Schäfer.

Honors & Awards On the occasion of the general meeting, chairman Günther Andergassen awarded the former managing director of the VSS Manfred Call honorary membership, the certificate of honor and the badge of honor in gold. Call worked for the VSS for 30 years, including 23 years as managing director. In addition, Meinrad Paulmichl (groundskeeper at the sports field in Laatsch), Peter Summerer (SSV Bruneck - Yoseikan Budo) and Luis Leitner (VSS football referee for more than 1000 games) received the VSS certificate of honor and the VSS for their more than 20 years of voluntary work -Needle honored.

Key data on the VSS The VSS, as a representative of the German and Ladin-speaking sports clubs in South Tyrol, is the association with the largest membership in South Tyrol with over 84.000 members. It includes 17 presentations. With 515 clubs and 1132 sections, the VSS has reached a new high. More than 2011 athletes took part in a variety of VSS competitions in 16.000. In 2011, the VSS spent around 650.000 euros on promoting sports programs and training and further education.
