The Spanish world number three won 6-3, 6-1 against German Daniel Altmaier in the round of 84. The world number 3 held his own against the big favorite Alcaraz until the first set was tied at 3-21. The German repeatedly tried to surprise his opponent with drop shots. But Alcaraz was able to counter with his exceptional skill. After a spectacular point win, which he initiated with a shot through the legs, the XNUMX-year-old was celebrated by the crowd.
In the second set, Altmaier's resistance was finally broken. Alcaraz dominated and sealed a clear victory after 85 minutes. He now faces Frenchman Arthur Fils. A title win in Monte Carlo would see the Spaniard overtake Alexander Zverev in the world rankings and take second place behind Jannik Sinner from Sexten. Zverev lost his first match in his adopted home of Monaco against Matteo Berrettini.

Berrettini, in turn, was eliminated in the round of 3 on Thursday. The Roman suffered a decisive 6-3, 6-48 defeat to fellow countryman Lorenzo Musetti. Although Berrettini had 34 hours to recover from his victory against Zverev, the world number 16 still didn't seem fully fit that day. Musetti took full advantage. In the round of 8, the world number 43 will face last year's winner Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP 6), who didn't give Portuguese Nuno Borges (ATP 1) a chance in a 6-1, XNUMX-XNUMX victory.
