Out in Sassuolo: Weis loses to De Jong

The Challenger tournament in Sassuolo is over for Alexander Weis. On Thursday, the Bozen native lost in the quarterfinals to the Dutchman Jesper De Jong.

Still at On Wednesday, Weis made waves with a win against Thiago Tirante (ATP 124) But 24 hours later, the Challenger tournament in Emilia-Romagna was over for the South Tyrolean. Weis lost to De Jong in 3 sets 2:1 (7:5, 3:6, 3:6).


De Jong - he is number 146 in the world - had to use everything he has in his repertoire against the Bozen native. The first two sets in particular were hard-fought. After Weis had taken a 1-0 lead, De Jong equalized. In the decisive third set, the Dutchman was ahead 3-6.

For Weis, this marks the end of a strong Challenger tournament that will put him in the top 300 of the ATP rankings. The South Tyrolean is currently ranked 316th in the world rankings. Starting next week, he will be found much higher up.
