The Musetti drama in the Monte Carlo finale

Lorenzo Musetti played the most important match of his career on Sunday. The final of the Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo was a real drama.

After a fantastic week, Lorenzo Musetti (ATP 16) reached the final of a Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo for the first time in his career. Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 3) was waiting for him there on Sunday. Ultimately, Musetti had to admit defeat to the four-time Grand Slam champion 6-3, 1-6, 0-6. This was partly because he was seriously injured towards the end and could barely stay on his feet.

In the principality, Musetti got off to a flying start and posed considerable problems for Alcaraz. Although the Italian immediately conceded a break, he then broke his opponent's serve twice himself and pulled ahead 4-1. After 41 minutes, Musetti wrapped up the first set with a 6-3 win. Then things started to get a bit rocky – partly because Alcaraz stepped up a gear and delivered some spectacular tennis.

The Spaniard quickly took a 5-0 lead and eventually wrapped up the set 6-1. Musetti was visibly tired, and he was also increasingly plagued by physical problems. In the third set, the Italian had to take a medical timeout, during which the physiotherapist massaged his thigh.

Musetti is in pain

From then on, Musetti was unable to react, barely able to move on the court, and just waited for Alcaraz to seal the victory. The Spaniard won the third set 6-0, securing his first title in Monte Carlo.

Starting Monday, Alcaraz will be No. 2 in the world again, behind South Tyrolean superstar Jannik Sinner. Musetti, meanwhile, has shown this week that he's now a truly world-class player. The man from Carrara will advance from 16th to 11th in the ATP rankings, thus achieving his best ranking. The top 10 is only a matter of time at this point.
