Davis Cup: Italy definitely in the Final 8

The big goal of the Davis Cup has been achieved for Italy's tennis players: Thanks to support from supporters, the Azzurri qualified for the Final 8 in Malaga on Saturday evening - and this without their superstar Jannik Sinner. He will, however, be cheering from the stands on Sunday for the last group duel.

Late on Saturday evening it was clear: Italy had already qualified for the Davis Cup before the third group match and would play for the title in the Final 8 in Malaga. This was made possible by the help of the Brazilians, who won the first two singles matches against Belgium's tennis players. This means that the result of Italy's last match against the Netherlands on Sunday is irrelevant; the only thing that matters is winning the group.

Italy can therefore continue to defend its title from last year. Matteo Berrettini, Flavio Cobolli, Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori were in action for Italy in the group matches in Bologna. The two Brazilian victories came on Saturday from Joao Fonseca (6:3, 6:7 and 6:3 against Raphael Collignon) and Thiago Monteiro (3:6, 7:6 and 7:5 against Zizou Bergs).

Jannik Sinner in Bologna

Jannik Sinner is not competing in Bologna – at least not as a player on the court. The Sextner had taken a few days off after winning the US Open last Sunday. He was also at home, and among other things he visited young footballers in Bruneck during training (SportNews has reported).

Sinner landed in Bologna on Saturday. He will be cheering on his Italian colleagues from the stands on Sunday. At the Final 8 in Malaga (November 19th to 24th), the Sexten superstar will be back on the pitch himself - and fighting for Italy's title defense.
