The first big surprise at the Australian Open

The Australian Open has been running in Melbourne since Sunday. Now there was the first big surprise.

The Danish tennis professional Holger Rune was surprisingly eliminated in the second round of the Australian Open. The 20-year-old world number eight lost on Thursday in Melbourne against French wildcard player Arthur Cazaux 6:7 (4:7), 4:6, 6:4, 3:6.

Rune had to do without the support of his coach Boris Becker in Melbourne. The three-time Wimbledon winner is following the first Grand Slam tournament of the season as a TV expert Eurosport from Munich. Instead, the Dane was looked after by Severin Lüthi.

Rune never found his form against the 21-year-old Cazaux. In the third set, the Dane had to be treated and from then on played with a tape under his left knee. “Huge compliment, Arthur Cazaux deserved to win,” said Becker as a TV expert Eurosport: “But I’m not disappointed with Holger Rune either. He lost to someone better today, you just have to be honest about that.”
