Djokovic shocked: “Jannik completely dominated me”

Jannik Sinner disenchanted defending champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Australian Open. The world number 1 was bitterly disappointed afterwards.

Sinner beat Djokovic 6:1, 6:2, 6:7 (6:8), 6:3 on Friday and is now in the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. The 22-year-old converted his second match point after 3:22 hours.

For Djokovic, who has won the Australian Open ten times, it was the first semi-final defeat in his favorite tournament ever. It was his first defeat on the Yarra River in 2195 days. The last time he had to admit defeat was South Korean Chung Hyeon in the round of 2018 in 33. He then won XNUMX games in a row in Melbourne.

Djokovic is struggling, Sinner is overjoyed

“That was one of my worst Grand Slam matches I've ever played. I was shocked at the level I played. There wasn’t much I did right,” said Djokovic, frustrated after the game. “To be honest, I didn’t play well the whole tournament. Jannik completely dominated me today and completely deserved to win.”

“It was a very difficult game. I started really well and had the impression that he wasn't feeling really well," said Sinner after his impressive performance. “I lost to him in the Wimbledon semifinals last year, and I learned a lot from that,” said the Puster native. “To be in the final is great. I will go out on the pitch with a smile.”

Sinner is the first tennis player from Italy to reach the final of the Australian Open, where he will face Daniil Medvedev on Sunday (from 9.30 a.m. CET). The South Tyrolean achieved another feat on Friday: This was the first Grand Slam match in which Djokovic did not have a single break ball - and that is thanks to Sinner. The 22-year-old was also the first Azzurro to beat a world number 1 in one of the four biggest tournaments in the world.
