A Grand Slam winner retires

German tennis player Angelique Kerber will end her career after the Olympic Games.

The three-time Grand Slam winner announced this decision via Instagram before the start of the Summer Games in Paris. "Before the Olympics begin, I can already say that I will never forget Paris 2024 because it will be my last professional tournament as a tennis player," the 36-year-old wrote on Thursday.

Kerber became a mother for the first time 17 months ago and was unable to repeat the great sporting successes she had enjoyed at the peak of her career after her return. She won the Australian Open and the US Open in 2016 and became the first German world number one after Steffi Graf.

Two years later, she triumphed at the grass court classic Wimbledon. This makes the Kiel native the most successful German tennis player after Graf. She also won Olympic silver at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
