Historic: Musetti storms into the Wimbledon quarterfinals

For the first time in the history of international tennis, two players from Italy are in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. Lorenzo Musetti followed Jannik Sinner's example this Monday.

Lorenzo Musetti is nine months younger than Jannik Sinner, just as talented, but not nearly as successful. But that could still change. The 22-year-old from Carrara, who is ranked 25th in the world, took a significant step in his career this Monday.

Musetti has made it to the quarterfinals for the first time in Wimbledon. After a stuttering start, he confidently defeated the French outsider Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (ATP 58) 4:6, 6:3, 6:3, 6:2. After this match, which lasted just over two hours, Musetti will face the winner of the duel between Taylor Fritz and Alexander Zverev in the round of the last eight.

This is the first time ever that two Azzurri are in the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Jannik Sinner secured his ticket on Sunday with a three-set win against Ben Shelton, he will face Daniil Medvedev on Tuesday. In the women’s category, French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini (ATP 7), also a player from Italy, in the quarterfinals.
