“Jannik, you are in Olympus”: The sports world celebrates Sinner

Jannik Sinner achieved something historic on Friday, defeating the great dominator Novak Djokovic and reaching the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. The Sesto region was then celebrated on a grand scale.

Semi-final victory at the Australian Open, and that too against Novak Djokovic, the Melbourne dominator par excellence and perhaps the best tennis player of all time: Jannik Sinner celebrated the biggest victory of his career on Friday. But even at this moment, the man from Sexten kept a cool head and impressed with his mental arithmetic skills. “It’s currently 8 o’clock at my house. So good morning to everyone,” said the 22-year-old in the interview after the match, causing collective amusement in the stands.

With his down-to-earth manner, Sinner has not only played his way into the hearts of local fans, but has also enchanted fans around the world. This is also clear from the headlines that the phenomenal Sinner triumph has generated. The victory over Novak Djokovic went around the world.

The press pays homage to the shooting star

“Sinner snatches the Australian crown away from Djokovic. The Serb loses in Melbourne for the first time in 2195 days,” writes the Spanish newspaper Mark. “Over time, the spectators on Friday realized that they were witnessing a historic event.” The French sports paper Staff reports, on the other hand: “The king has fallen! “It was an earthquake in Melbourne, with a Djokovic who was unrecognizable and a Sinner who played almost perfectly.”

The Gazzetta dello Sport, Italy's highest-circulation newspaper had the headline in large letters: “Jannik, you are in Olympus. Djokovic is beaten, Sinner is playing his first Grand Slam final!” with the BBC writes: “For a long time the question, especially here in Melbourne, was: Why can't the young generation manage to stop Djokovic? Sinner showed the way.” The happy apprentice beat the master, but that was the headline Mirror. The German weekly magazine speaks of a Sinner who was too strong for Djokovic and who developed outstandingly.

The big finale is on Sunday

Anyone who knows Sinner knows that he doesn't pay much attention to such headlines. Rather, the young star concentrates on sports. And the Sesto native still has a big mission ahead of him: On Sunday he will play in the final and meet Daniil Medvedev. Sinner can finally be crowned king.
