After a tough fight: Medvedev also in the semifinals

The Russian Daniil Medvedev followed Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic into the semi-finals at the Australian Open.

The 27-year-old defeated Poland's Hubert Hurkacz 7:6 (7:4), 2:6, 6:3, 5:7, 6:4 in Melbourne on Wednesday. Medvedev, in the final of the first Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season in 2021 and 2022, converted his second match point after 3:59 hours. Carlos Alcaraz or Alexander Zverev are now waiting in the semifinals.

“I'm completely exhausted. I just tried to get through somehow,” said Medvedev after his 100th game at a Grand Slam tournament. In the other semi-final on Friday, defending champions Novak Djokovic from Serbia and the South Tyrolean Jannik Sinner opposite to.

Yastremska emotional success run

Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska became the first qualifier in 46 years to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open. The 23-year-old won against 19-year-old Czech Linda Noskova 6:3, 6:4 in Melbourne on Wednesday and is now in the semi-finals of one of the four Grand Slam tournaments for the first time.

The tennis player dedicated her surprising victory to her compatriots who had been hit by the Russian war of aggression. “I am proud of our fighters in Ukraine,” Yastremska wrote on the television camera lens after the game.

In the semi-finals this Thursday, Yastremska will face either the Russian Anna Kalinskaya or Zheng Qinwen from China. The other semi-final will be contested by defending champion Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus and US Open champion Coco Gauff from the USA.
