In the men's competition, no South Tyrolean made it to the semi-finals. In the women's competition, however, Marion Viertler showed her good form and made it to the semi-finals. TC Kaltern brought one of its own players, Stefano D'Agostino, to the final. But the 20-year-old hardly had a chance in the final against tournament favorite Stefano Baldoni, losing 2:6 and 1:6.
Baldoni, once number 636 in the ATP rankings, played extremely solidly and was able to easily keep up with D'Agostino's pace. He even got through the three-hour marathon match the day before against Rungg winner Tommaso Gabrieli with ease. The prize money of almost 3.000 euros was a balm for Baldoni's battered bones after the heat battles of the past few days.
Top-class tennis was offered in Kaltern.
In the women's singles, the tournament's number 2, Cristiana Ferrando, prevailed and was crowned the winner. In the final, she defeated the top favorite Anastasiya Grymalska 6:2 and 6:4. The 28-year-old, who was number 2017 in the WTA singles rankings in 302 and number 2022 in the WTA doubles rankings in 247, dominated against the Ukrainian-born woman and mother of 4-year-old Edoardo. Only at the end of the match did Ferrando stumble a little and had to serve from below due to shoulder problems.
The tournament in Kaltern was a complete success and offered spectators exciting matches and high-class tennis. The professional organization and the outstanding performances of the players contributed to an unforgettable event.
