Swiatek and Ruud continued (almost) effortlessly

World number one Iga Swiatek has reached the second round of the Australian Open. In the men's race, Casper Ruud easily made it to round two.

The 22-year-old Pole won on Tuesday in Melbourne against Sofia Kenin from the USA 7:6 (7:2), 6:2 and only had a few difficulties in the first set. The eleventh seeded Norwegian won against the Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6:1, 6:3, 6:1.

In contrast, the Grand Slam comeback of former world number one Angelique Kerber went wrong. The 35-year-old German was defeated by the American Danielle Collins 2:6, 6:3, 1:6. Collins, in the final of the first Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season in 2022, converted her second match point after 1:52 hours.
Kerber only returned to the tennis tour at the United Cup around the turn of the year after an 18-month baby break. Previously, she had not played a match since Wimbledon 2022 and gave birth to her daughter Liana in February 2023. Their expectations were correspondingly low before their first appearances.
