Anna Kalinskaya had to admit defeat to the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets in the third round of the US Open. It was a match that sparked heated discussions, because right at the beginning there was a highly controversial scene, which made Kalinskaya furious.

A ball that her opponent returned had touched the ground twice beforehand - actually a clear point for Kalinskaya. While the referee awarded the point to the Brazilian and was not swayed by the video evidence, her opponent Beatriz Haddad Maia made no appearance of fair play. Instead, she coldly turned her back on Kalinskaya.

The Russian didn't like that at all. Not only did she look reproachfully in the direction of her opponent, but she also asked her with an obvious gesture what all this was about. A gesture that is typically Italian - and that's why it went viral on the internet.


A user posted a photo of Kalinskaya protesting on platform X and the appropriate headline: "This is what happens when you've been in a love story with a boy from Italy for months." This is obviously a reference to Jannik Sinner. The post received thousands of likes within a few hours and was viewed more than half a million times. Users certainly had a lot of fun.
