Italian Championship: Monfardini sets the tone

The Italian Table Tennis Championships took place in Terni (Umbria) over the weekend. Four athletes from South Tyrol participated, including the top players Gaia Monfardini, Giorgia Piccolin, and Debora Vivarelli.

Gaia Monfardini of ASV TT Südtirol provided the highlight in Terni, winning the Italian Championship title in mixed doubles (1st category). Teaming up with Jhonny Oyebode from Sassari, the Italian player with Chinese roots triumphed over Giorgia Piccolin and Niagol Stoyanov (who plays for Fiamme Azzure). Deborah Vivarelli and her partner Andrea Puppo (Sassari) finished in 8th place, as did Arianna Barari, also of ASV TT Südtirol, who partnered with Jacopo Cipriano (Muravera).

Monfardini also won the Italian championship title in women's doubles. Partnering with Tan Wenling (Norbello), she took gold ahead of the South Tyrolean duo Piccolin/Vivarelli. Barani and her partner Giulia Cavalli (Muravera) finished in 8th place.

Finally, Monfardini – ranked 78th in the world – also triumphed in the Category 1 singles, crowning herself Italian champion. Piccoli also took bronze, while Vivarelli was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Barani's run ended in the round of 16 (Group 2).
