Two meeting records on the first day, Coughlin inspires Bolzano

The three-time Olympic champion Natalie Coughlin from the USA won the 100 m individual medley in 59,46 seconds, relegated Laura Letrari from Brixen to second place (1.02,00) and snatched Letrari's meeting record from last year (59,85). The unknown Dutchwoman Sharon van Rouwendaal set another event best time in the 100 m backstroke.

In 59,42, she improved Sophie Edington's previous meeting record from 2008 by 0,14 seconds, leaving Daniela Samulski (59,79) in second place. The men's 100 m freestyle was awaited with the most excitement, after all, Italy's double world champion Filippo Magnini was competing in Bolzano for the first time.

“Re magno” had to settle for third place in 48,77 seconds, which he secured with a great improvement in the second half of the race and left Marco Orsi (48,94) behind him. The American Josh Schneider secured victory in 48,41, just ahead of Jason Dunford from Kenya (48,44). “I’m happy for the first race this year. I managed the start and the turns well,” said Magnini.

There was a Dutch victory in the women's 100 m freestyle. Ranomi Kromowidjojo repeated her victory from last year and won in 52,95 seconds ahead of favorite Coughlin (53,81). Kronmowidjojo celebrated a second victory on the first day of the Bolzano meeting and also won the 50 m Delfin in 26,33 seconds, narrowly ahead of Estonian Triin Aljand (26,35) and her famous compatriot Marleen Veldhuis (26,55). Laura Letrari finished in 27,48 in fourth place.

For the first time in meeting history, two athletes shared victory in the men's 50m breaststroke. Former European champion Alessandro Terrin and reigning European champion Fabio Scozzoli won together in 27,37. Local hero Lisa Fissneider came in second in the women's 50 m breaststroke. The 16-year-old from Bolzano Nuoto only had to admit defeat to the 31,87 m European champion Caroline Ruhnau from Germany (100) in a strong 31,65 seconds.

In the men's 100 m backstroke, world record holder Nick Thoman repeated his victory from last year, but benefited from the disqualification of Russian Stanislav Donets. Thoman won in 52,17 seconds ahead of his compatriot Eugene Godsoe (52,51). Jason Dunford, who missed winning the 100 m freestyle by just three hundredths, won the 50 m Delfin in 23,60 seconds ahead of the 100 m European champion Evgeny Korotyshkin from Russia (23,94) and the Italian Mattia Nalesso ( 24,22).

Adam Mania took the third US win of the day. He won the 100 m individual medley in 54,98 ahead of Scozzoli (55,20) and the nine-time European champion Peter Mankoc from Slovenia (55,66).

Two meeting records on the first day, Coughlin inspires Bolzano

The first day of the 14th International Bozen Swim Meeting lived up to expectations. In the Albert Pircher Hall at the vicarage, which was, as always, far too small, there were top performances non-stop and, to top it off, two new meeting records.
