40 nations will take part in the IBU Cup in Martell in December

The competitions are scheduled for December 11th and 12th. After the opening race in Norway, which will take place in two weeks, Martell will be the second IBU Cup to be held in the new season.

It is also the second IBU Cup to take place in Martell in the current calendar year, as this racing series was hosted here in February as the penultimate race of the past season.

Participants from no fewer than 40 nations are expected in the small community of Martell. Of course, the big biathlon nations such as Germany, Norway and Russia will not be missing. But there will also be countries that would hardly have been believed to practice this sport before, such as Armenia, Moldova, Brazil and Turkey, which will send at least eight athletes to the competitions in Martell.

So you can count on a very colorful and, above all, top-class starting field. The program includes the individual competitions on Saturday (20km for men and 15km for women) and the sprint competitions on Sunday (7,5km and 10km respectively).

The IBU Cup was introduced instead of the old European Cup and is primarily used to qualify or recommend for the World Cup. This year this racing series was upgraded again. The starting field in the World Cup has been reduced and the top nations have each lost one starting place in the World Cup. This means that some well-known athletes who no longer have a fixed starting place in the World Cup will have to compete in the IBU Cup and qualify for the World Cup in turn.

Since it is the second IBU Cup in Martell, for many athletes it is about qualifying for the World Cup races in January 2011 and therefore competitions at the highest level can be expected.

A small part of the cross-country ski trails in Val Martello are already in operation. However, there is still a lack of large amounts of snow to be able to prepare the entire route. Everything is also ready for the production of artificial snow and we can begin as soon as the temperatures allow it.

The IBU Cup is a highlight that the organizers in Martell have on the program next winter, but it is by far not the only event. On the extensive schedule of OK President Georg Altstätter there is an Italian Cup weekend before Christmas, two competitions as part of the Biathlon South Tyrol Cup in January and February 2011, the Italian championship for students in February and the Marmotta Trophy on March 6, 2011. This is the first ski touring World Cup in South Tyrol.
