Biathlon World Cup is back – with great hope from Italy

After the World Championships in Nove Mesto and a ten-day break, the Biathlon World Cup returns this week in Oslo. At Holmenkollen, the focus of the home fans is primarily on Lisa Vittozzi.

A biathlete from Italy has only won the overall World Cup twice. Both times it was Dorothea Wierer in 2019 and 2020. Lisa Vittozzi already landed in second place (2019) and third place (2023) in the overall World Cup. This year the Italian has another chance at the big crystal ball. It would be the next step towards an extraordinary career for Vittozzi after the 28-year-old became individual world champion for the first time in Nove Mesto this year.

But the competition is fierce for Vittozzi - to be more precise, it's a four-way battle. Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold is still in the lead in the overall World Cup with 719 points, although the Norwegian experienced a completely botched World Cup. But this year for the first time this was no longer part of the World Cup. Justine Braisaz-Bouchet is in second place with 689 points. Vittozzi (671) is third, followed by Julia Simon (662). So with 7 races to go everything is still close.

The third-to-last World Cup stop will be held at Holmenkollen. Then we head overseas (Soldier Hollow and Canmore). The stage in Oslo begins on Thursday with the women's sprint. From a South Tyrolean perspective Hannah Auchentaller returned to the squad. The Antholz woman has now won the IBU Cup. As is well known, Wierer decided to end her season early. Completing the Italian squad are Beatrice Trabucchi, Samuela Comola, Rebecca Passler and Michela Carrara.

For the men, the line-up has not changed compared to the World Cup: Didier Bionaz, Tommaso Giacomel, Elia Zeni, Patrick Braunhofer and Lukas hofer traveled to Oslo. For them, the competition week in Norway begins on Friday.
