Comeback after horror accident: Young talent with new tongue
Youth Olympic champion Juliane Frühwirt has had a difficult year. She broke her jaw and cheekbone in a dramatic accident in Tyrol. Now the athlete is fighting her way back into competition - albeit with a new tongue.

Frühwirt suffered serious injuries in the accident: she broke her jaw and cheekbone and as a result underwent a rare and particularly drastic procedure: a tongue transplant. In addition, some of her teeth and the circumstances suffered. Despite these setbacks, the two-time junior vice world champion from 2019 is not giving up and is aiming for a comeback in the coming Biathlon World Cup winter.
Frühwirt recently reported on Instagram about her emotional experience of taking part in a sporting event again 100 days after her operation. She started at the Stubai Ultratrail in Innsbruck and shared her gratitude and relief with her followers: "100 days after my accident in Galtür, including a broken jaw, tongue transplant, broken cheekbone and several ugly teeth, to be back in Innsbruck, the place where I had my operation, and to be able to stand on a starting line, was really crazy emotionally."
Proud despite failure
Although Frühwirt had to abandon the race early, she was proud: "The proudest DNF of my career," she wrote. DNF stands for "Did Not Finish" and emphasizes her pride and gratitude for being able to stand at the starting line again.With renewed vigor and impressive resilience, Frühwirt is optimistic about the future. The biathlete wants to attack again in the coming winter and recommend herself for higher tasks. The sporting world can look forward to seeing how her return turns out and what other successes she will celebrate.
