The Martello Valley is looking forward to the European Biathlon Championships

After the two short individual competitions (Short Individual) on Thursday, there were two official training sessions at the IBU Cup in Martell on Friday. At the weekend, the Grogg Biathlon Center will be back in action when two sprints (on Saturday) and two pursuit competitions will be held on Sunday to round off a fantastic week. Another topic that comes up again and again in the heart of the Stelvio National Park is the Biathlon European Championships 2025, which will also take place in Martell.

Training took place all day on Friday in Martell in ideal conditions. First, the men went to the cross-country ski trail and rehearsed at the shooting range, before the biathletes worked on their form in the early afternoon. The starting numbers for the two sprints on Saturday were then drawn. The men's competition will be opened by James Pacal from Switzerland from 11 a.m. The “Azzurri” are sending Cedric Christille (3), David Zingerle (Antholz/39), Daniele Cappellari (78) and Christoph Pircher (100) into the race. A total of 106 biathletes are taking part. For the women, a Swiss woman – Lydia Hiernickel – will also open the sprint at 14.30 p.m. Linda Zingerle (Antholz/29), Martina Trabucchi (40) and Sara Scattolo (77) are taking part in the competition for the Italian national team. There are 80 ski hunters on duty here.

Organizationally, everything is going smoothly in Martell, which is also confirmed by the IBU officials in the various working sessions. The only thing the organizing committee is worried about is the weather. “It started to snow a little in the afternoon and the snowfall will increase again on Saturday night. As usual, our hard-working piste team will do everything in its power to ensure that we have optimal conditions on the cross-country ski trail and at the shooting range. We ask spectators to find out about the road conditions in good time and possibly use our shuttle service from the Hotel Waldheim to the Grogg Biathlon Center,” says Georg Altstätter, Mayor of Martell and President of the OK Biathlon Martell.

There is already great enthusiasm for the 2025 European Championship

This year's IBU Cup in Martell is the dress rehearsal for next year's European Championships. The 2025 continental title fights are already an issue for biathletes. For example, the Norwegian Vebjoern Soerum, the winner of the short individual competition, said: “I celebrated my debut in the IBU Cup in Martell, so I have special memories of this competition location. I like - and I think I like - the track here, so I think it's very cool that the European Championships are taking place here next year. My goal is to take part in the World Championships – that’s what I’m working towards. I am convinced that there will be exciting competitions at the European Championships because the cross-country ski trail is very demanding. Because of this you can drive out of ledges. It’s always exciting to compete here – it will be the same at the European Championships.”

While Soerum is aiming to take part in the World Cup in 12 months, local hero Christoph Pircher could be at the start at the home European Championship from January 28th to February 2nd, 2025. The 20-year-old from Terlan is working towards this goal: “Martell has presented himself as a professional organizer for many years. Nothing is missing, the routes are difficult and there is guaranteed snow. We on the Italian national team benefit greatly from this center, also because snow farming means we can train here in November.”
