Austria's biathlon legend is now the new boss

Immediately after the end of the season, there was a drastic personnel change in Austria's biathlon team.

Christoph Sumann is taking over the position of Sports Director of Biathlon at the Austrian Ski Federation (ÖSV). The 49-year-old succeeds Franz Berger, who recently stepped down from his position and held this position since 2019. Sumann is one of Austria's most successful biathletes, winning four World Championship and Olympic medals. The Styrian also finished second in the overall World Cup in the 2009/10 season.

Sumann, who ended his active career in 2014, most recently worked for several years as a biathlon TV expert for the ORF and now wants to lead the domestic biathlon sport back to success, especially with a view to the 2028 World Championships in Hochfilzen.

Full of praise

ÖSV Sports Director Mario Stecher was full of praise for the new biathlon director. "His experience and profound knowledge of national and international biathlon are undisputed, and I am confident that under his leadership our team will once again catch up with the top nations in both the men's and women's competitions," said the Tyrolean. Sumann himself will speak at a press conference in Innsbruck on Thursday.
