Tumor shock for biathlon queen: “I was so scared”

Six world championship titles, 42 World Cup victories, six overall World Cup triumphs in a row: Magdalena Forsberg has made history in her biathlon career. The 55-year-old, who retired in spring 2002, is still considered the most successful ski hunter of all time. What many people don't know: Some time ago, Forsberg was struck by a stroke of fate that turned her life upside down.

In 2018, Forsberg, who dominated biathlon at the turn of the millennium at will, struggled with stomach pain, as she did in the podcast Vägen till top explained. So in May she went to see a doctor and had a thorough examination. The diagnosis pulled the rug out from under Forsberg because the doctors discovered a kidney tumor. “It was a big shock,” said the biathlon legend.

Fear for yourself and for your children During this time, Forsberg's life was completely turned upside down. The thoughts revolved primarily around her two children - and the sad case that their mother might soon no longer be there. “I was so afraid, especially of not being able to see my children grow up. My most important task became to teach them everything. Can you use the washing machine? How often should bed linen be changed? Can they talk about feelings? Can you cook pasta?” were Forsberg’s emotional words.

After the diagnosis, the former biathlete underwent surgery and was examined in detail for eight weeks. Then, in late summer 2018, the good news finally came: the tumor was benign. “I got a bonus life and I’m very grateful for that,” says Magdalena Forsberg.
