South Tyrol mourns figure skater

Great sadness in South Tyrol: 23-year-old figure skater Julia Marie Gaiser from Brixen recently died in a serious traffic accident in Salzburg.

The young athlete was cycling on a bike path when she was hit by a truck turning right near a busy intersection. The driver, a 46-year-old Austrian, was sober, according to police. For Julia Marie, help came too late – she died at the scene.

Gaiser had already dedicated herself to figure skating as a child and found her sporting home at WSV Brixen. She quickly developed into one of the country's most promising athletes. She participated in national and international competitions and was also a member of the Italian national team for a time. She most recently lived in Salzburg, where she studied.

Mourning throughout the country

The Italian Ice Skating Federation (FISG), her home club, and many of her supporters expressed their deep sadness. Anneliese Schenk, the FISG's figure skating representative in South Tyrol, describes her as a "passionate, disciplined athlete with a big heart." Brixen's mayor, Andreas Jungmann, also expressed his condolences to the family: "With Julia, we are losing not only a talent, but also a wonderful person."

The match between SG Barbian/Villanders and Albeins in the 2nd Amateur League Group B was subsequently cancelled – the brother of the deceased plays for Barbian/Villanders.
