There's baby news in the world of winter sports: A controversial cross-country skier is expecting a new baby.

"Thank you to our mom for giving us these wonderful girls": With these words, Alexander Bolshunov announced his personal happiness. The Russian cross-country skiing star became a father for the second time a few days ago. His wife Anna, also a former cross-country skier, gave birth to little Olivia – making their firstborn Eva a big sister.

On a personal level, Bolshunov is blissfully happy, in contrast to his sporting career. Due to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, no Russian athletes have been allowed to participate in international FIS competitions since 2022. With 29 World Cup victories, 34 other podium finishes, and three Olympic gold medals, Bolshunov is one of the most successful cross-country skiers of recent years.

At the same time, the Russian is a controversial figure in the cross-country skiing world, especially since his fiery temperament has repeatedly caused scandals. The most recent occurred at the end of December 2025, when Bolshunov attacked and injured an opponent after a Russian Cup race. He has also been politically controversial; for example, after the start of the war in Ukraine, Bolshunov attended a Russian propaganda event and wore the war symbol "Z" on his chest.

Interview causes a stir

Bolshunov recently caused a stir with an interview. "We know that there are Scandinavian countries that are doing everything they can to keep the Russians out of international competitions," said the 29-year-old, who is still banned from FIS events. "At the same time, we understand that Russia is their biggest competitor in cross-country skiing. Let's start again and instead exclude the Norwegian team for the next five years. Without the Norwegians, who would be at the top? Us, of course."
