Tour de Ski: The wait in Dobbiaco is over

With a total of six races - three for men and the same number for women - the Tour de Ski stages in Toblach are the heart of the most important stage race in cross-country skiing this year. In the Alta Pusteria, a preliminary decision will be made in two individual races, two sprint races and two distance races when it comes to overall victory in this year's most important cross-country skiing event.

On Tuesday, January 3rd there will be an individual race over three kilometers for women and five kilometers for men in the Nordic Arena. The next day, on Wednesday, January 4th, the exciting sprint races will take place before the “classic” for men, the individual race from Cortina to Dobbiaco over 5 kilometers, takes place on Thursday, January 35th. Meanwhile, the women will compete in a 15 km race in Dobbiaco.

Exciting duels for the overall victory So far, the Tour de Ski 2011/12 has been characterized by an exciting duel for both men and women. In the men's race, after four stages, Norwegian Petter Northug and his rival Dario Cologna from Switzerland are separated by just 1,1 seconds. Alexander Legkov from Russia, who is currently in third place overall, is almost a minute behind at 52,3 seconds.

South Tyrol's top cross-country skiers cannot (yet) be found in the top places. Thomas Moriggl (Schlinig) is currently in 30th place, Roland Clara (Reischach) in 33rd place, David Hofer (St. Christina) in 52nd place and Dietmar Nöckler (Bruneck) in 62nd place.

Justyna Kowalczyk and Marit Björgen are currently the best active cross-country skiers and the duel between the Polish Kowalczyk and the Norwegian Björgen also continues in the Tour de Ski. Kowalczyk is currently ahead by 26,6 seconds. Therese Johaug's gap to the leaders is 1.06,6:XNUMX minutes. The Norwegian is currently third in the overall standings.

South Tyrol's only top cross-country skier at the start is the young Debora Agreiter from Val Badia. Her gap to Kowalczyk has grown to 7.41,9:45 minutes after four stages. This puts her in XNUMXth place in the rankings ahead of the three “home races” in Toblach.

That was the Tour de Ski 2010/2011 in Toblach and Cortina Last year in Toblach, the Canadian Devon Kershaw and the Slovenian Petra Majdic celebrated victories in the two sprint races. Kershaw beat Dario Cologna from Switzerland and Norway's Petter Northug to their places. Majdic was ahead of two athletes from the Italian national team, which of course made the numerous fans in and around the Nordic Arena very happy: the now retired Arianna Follis and Magda Genuin.

In the individual race from Cortina to Dobbiaco, Cologna laid the foundation for the eventual overall victory in the Tour de Ski with a new course record of 1:20.06,9 hours. Justyna Kowalczyk from Poland lost a lot of time to her pursuers Arianna Follis and Marianna Longa in the women's 15-kilometer race, but she won in the Hochpustertal as well as later in the overall ranking.

As far as the Tour de Ski is concerned, a South Tyrolean cross-country skier also showed his best side in the most important stage race. Roland Clara from Reischach finished the competition in fifth place after around 120 kilometers and eight stages in Oberstdorf, Oberhof, Toblach/Cortina and in the Fiemme Valley.
