Ahead of Olympic races: Death saddens Austrian woman

The Olympic Games are drawing to a close. Before her final major appearance, however, an Austrian star cross-country skier has to cope with a death.

The Olympic cross-country skiing program will conclude with a true highlight: the 50-kilometer classic race on Sunday. However, Austrian Teresa Stadlober has to cope with some sad news before this race: she has lost her beloved grandmother. The 2022 Olympic bronze medalist posted a touching farewell message on Instagram.

"Grandparents are our biggest fans. They always stand behind us, believe in us, and shape us for life. On Monday, you closed your eyes forever, without pain, just as you always wished. We are incredibly sad, but also incredibly grateful for the many years we shared, for all your love, and everything you gave us," said Stadlober in his emotional words.

Particularly touching: Stadlober's grandmother watched the skiathlon on television two weeks ago. "I know you'll be watching my 50th birthday from above. I'll be skiing for you, with you in my heart. Thank you for everything, Grandma. I miss you terribly," the cross-country skier wrote.
