A North Tyrolean wins silver, the South Tyroleans impress

Johannes Lamparter made a strong start on Wednesday in the first of three Nordic combined events at the Olympic Games.

The 24-year-old from Hall in North Tyrol, who was sixth after the ski jump, won the silver medal in the 10km cross-country race, securing the sixth medal overall for the Austrian Olympic Committee (ÖOC) team. Lamparter was only one second behind Olympic champion Jens Luraas Oftebro of Norway in the final stretch. Finland's Eero Hirvonen finished third.

For Lamparter, the two-time world champion from 2021, it was the first Olympic medal of his career. Austria now has two gold and four silver medals at the XXV Winter Games. "It means an incredible amount to me; the conditions certainly weren't the easiest for me. In recent days, I seriously doubted whether I had a chance in such conditions," Lamparter admitted in an ORF television interview.

The two South Tyroleans also impressed at the home Olympics in Tesero on Wednesday. Samuel Costa finished in 13th place and his teammate from Val Gardena, Aaron Kostner, in 16th. They were the best Italian athletes. Alessandro Pittin came in 19th. The Nordic combined athletes' competition continues next week with the high-speed event and the team event.
