Dominik Fischnaller has his sights set on the medal.

Dominik Fischnaller is dreaming of a medal at the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina. The luge athlete mastered the first two runs in the men's singles competition excellently on Saturday.

The South Tyrolean skiers had dominated the training days on the new Eugenio Monti track, posting impressive times. On Saturday afternoon, they had to translate these performances into competition. Both Dominik Fischnaller and Leon Felderer succeeded in doing so, as after two of four runs they are currently in podium contention, behind a leading duo from Germany and Austria.

Fischnaller and Felderer weren't lucky in the bib draw: While the German favorites, Felix Loch and Max Langenhan, wore numbers one and two, Fischnaller started with numbers ten and twelve. Despite the deteriorating track conditions, Fischnaller managed to keep his deficit to Langenhan to a manageable level (+0,161 seconds). The 26-year-old had previously set a new track record on the Ampezzo ice. Austrian Jonas Müller finished just 35 hundredths of a second behind.

The balance of power remained the same in the second run, although Fischnaller started first this time and once again delivered a flawless performance. The Merano native improved his time by about half a second, but he still couldn't close the gap to the leading duo. Langenhan once again broke his track record and extended his lead over Müller to 0,162 seconds.

Fischnaller is lurking in third place, 0,298 seconds behind. Kristers Aparjods (Latvia) is his fiercest rival for a medal before the final decision. He is two-tenths of a second behind Fischnaller.

Leon Felderer can also look back on a positive performance at the halfway point. Although the 26-year-old made a slight mistake in the second run, fifth place is still a respectable result for the Olympic debutant. For the third South Tyrolean in the group, Alex Gufler, the first part of the competition didn't go as planned, as he currently sits in 18th place. The final run will take place on Sunday at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
