In the lead! Vötter/Oberhofer on course for a medal.

At the Olympic Games in Cortina d'Ampezzo on Wednesday evening, the focus was entirely on the doubles luge. A South Tyrolean duo made a strong showing in the women's competition.

Andrea Vötter and Marion Oberhofer shone in the first run of the women's doubles in Cortina: The South Tyrolean duo were the fastest of all on Wednesday evening and are narrowly in the lead.

But the German women Dajana Eitberger and Magdalena Matschina are lurking just 22 thousandths of a second behind. Currently in third place are the Austrians Selina Egle and Lara Kipp, who lost almost a tenth of a second to Vötter/Oberhofer after a mistake.

Large lead over sheet metal

The two South Tyrolean women have a lead of 39 hundredths of a second over fourth place, currently held by Latvians Marta Robezniece and Kitja Bogdanova. A medal is looking more than promising. The women's doubles final in Cortina will take place on Wednesday starting at 6:50 p.m. The men's races will be held before and after.

Rieder/Kainzwaldner also have a good chance

Then, in the first run of the men's doubles, Emanuel Rieder and Simon Kainzwaldner put on a strong performance. The South Tyrolean duo is in third place at the halfway point. They trail the two leading Americans, Marcus Mueller and Ansel Haugsjaa, by a mere 17 thousandths of a second.

But watch out: anything can still happen in the final. The top seven are separated by just 16 hundredths of a second. Currently in seventh place are the other South Tyrolean duo, Ivan Nagler and Fabian Malleier. The men's final starts at 7:19.45 p.m.
