The 955-meter-long natural toboggan run "Grantau" in Umhausen has already witnessed many memorable moments: from local hero Gerald Kammerlander's gold medal at the 2011 World Championships, to the unforgettable 2017 World Cup final with Greta Pinggera and Evelin Lanthaler tied for first place, and Thomas Kammerlander's gold medal at his home World Championships in 2021. But even the legendary "Grantau" has never experienced a race schedule like the one this coming weekend, featuring the World Cup, Eliminator, and Youth Games.
After training on Friday morning, the racing begins in the early afternoon (Women's and Men's Singles World Cup), followed by the Doubles in the early evening. Last year, Matthias Lambacher and Peter Lambacher won the World Cup, while Tobias Paur and Andreas Hofer celebrated their first victory in the Eliminator.
On Saturday, the finals in the women's and men's singles events continue, immediately followed by the Eliminator with the round of 16 in the singles, and then the doubles will compete in the knockout elimination race. Sunday morning is dedicated to the round of 16 and quarterfinals of the singles (women and men), before the top four compete for the title in the final in the early afternoon. Last year's first victory for Switzerland in the Eliminator, achieved by Stefan Federer, remains unforgettable.
FIL Youth Games on the World Cup stage
The FIL Youth Games are the world's largest luge event for youth classes 1-4 (eight to 14 years old). On Saturday afternoon (after the Eliminator doubles), the two training runs are scheduled. In the evening, the 2026 Youth Games will be officially opened in the Umhausen pavilion in the village center, along with the awards ceremonies for the women's and men's singles (World Cup) as well as the doubles (Eliminator). On Sunday, the young athletes will compete in their two runs between the Eliminator heats, and the winners of all races will be determined in the afternoon.“It’s an ambitious program, but we see it as a unique opportunity to bring the youngest lugers together with the best lugers in the world. The World Cup and Eliminator will be streamed live, so we’ll also be showing the FIL Youth Games for the first time. We roughly estimate around 600 runs in 48 hours,” explains Thomas Kammerlander, head of the organizing committee in Umhausen.
