First World Cup Demo Event at the Jenner in Schönau am Königssee
Natural track luge is becoming alpine luge: Following several successful test runs last year, a new format will celebrate its premiere on February 28, 2026. With the first World Cup Demo Event in alpine luge sprint slalom, the International Luge Federation (FIL) is entering a new era.

Unlike classic luge on ice tracks or icy natural trails, alpine luge also takes place on snow-covered slopes or ski runs. Races are held on either artificial or natural snow. The courses are shorter, the speeds more moderate, but the sport is significantly more spectator-friendly. A set slalom course, similar to those used in ski or snowboard races, is used. The lugers navigate around gates: feel, technique, and quick reactions are paramount. The newly developed alpine luge allows for high maneuverability on ice and snow.
Jenner as the ideal venue
The fact that the premiere of the new format is taking place at the Jenner mountain is a long-standing tradition: Luge is deeply rooted in the region. The Berchtesgaden Luge Club was founded as early as 1923, and the first "Bavarian Luge Championships" were held on Vorderbrandstraße in 1926. And since 1969, Schönau am Königssee has been home to the world's first artificial ice track.“The very first Ski World Cup race was held on the Jenner on January 5, 1967 – a men’s slalom,” recalls Jennerbahn board member Thomas Mühlthaler. “We are delighted that this young sport is now celebrating its competitive premiere with us. With our Jennerhex toboggan run, tobogganing is already firmly established here.”
