Sports Luge World Cup: South Tyroleans take advantage of home advantage

It was a true sensation what the Funes organizers achieved in the last few days. Despite the high temperatures, everything was perfectly prepared for the World Luge Championships and was a real spectacle. Südtriol's sports toboggans knew how to take advantage of the home advantage and won big.

The festival started on Saturday with the decision in the doubles competition. The Villnöss native Patrick Lambacher and his doubles partner Simon Schwienbacher from Tisens won the world title in a confident manner. For Lambacher it was the third title on the sports luge in doubles. By the way, Patrick Lambacher is also the reigning world champion in luge on natural track with his younger brother Matthias (He secured the overall World Cup in luge on natural track in Winterleiten in Styria on Sunday with the youngest of the Lambacher brothers). Patrick Lambacher has retired from professional tobogganing for personal reasons and has returned to his roots in sport tobogganing. The duo Lambacher/Schwienbacher was accompanied on the podium by two other couples from South Tyrol. The duo Mair Tobias and Müller Tobias from Tisens came second, closely followed by their club colleagues Frei Sebastian and Frei Matthias.

For the men, the podium was also a purely South Tyrolean affair. Maximilian Preindl managed to defend his title and win his third world championship title in a row. Preindl didn't start the World Cup weekend well - he had relatively big problems with his material coordination during the official training runs on Friday and found himself in the role of an outsider. However, due to the change in the weather and the resulting change in track conditions, luck was a bit on his side, as the change created a completely new situation for everyone. While still lurking in third place in the first run, he was able to improve in the second run and move up to first place with the best time. Half-time leader Simon Schwienbacher narrowly slipped to third place. The Latzfons Torggler Martin pushed himself between the two.

Women's and team competition
In the women's category, it was once again one of the North Tyrolean Frischmann sisters who ended up laughing from the top podium. Melanie Frischmann was unbeatable in Villnöss, she was once again able to show her class and, like in 2018 in Laces, was crowned world champion. From a South Tyrolean perspective, there was still a pleasing result: the two juniors Tschurtschenthaler Hannah from Olang and Peccei Lara from La Val/Wengen completed the podium in second and third place.

As expected, ITA 1 was the measure of all things in the team competition. The three fastest men in the world championship, Schwienbacher Simon, Torggler Martin and Preindl Maximilian, secured the title in a confident manner ahead of AUT 1 with Bucher Lukas, Wechselberger Alois and Ehammer Andreas. In third place was the ITA 2 team, which consisted of Tschurtschenthaler Hannah, Hofer Aaron and Müller Tobias.

The junior world champions
The junior world champions come from Olang. Tschurtschenthaler Hannah and Hofer Aaron followed suit from their club colleague Maximilian Preindl and joined the ranks of the world champions. In the master class category, Tolar Valentina from Slovenia became world champion, while in the men's category, the old champion Ehammer Andreas from Austria won.
