Farewell to a skiing legend: Pinturault retires

Alexis Pinturault, the most successful French alpine skier, will retire at the end of the World Cup season.

The soon-to-be 35-year-old, who won 34 World Cup races and the overall World Cup title in 2021, announced his upcoming retirement on Saturday in Courchevel. "It's the right time," emphasized the all-rounder, who focuses on the technical disciplines. Pinturault has won eleven medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships, including two World Championship golds in the combined event.

“I thought about it for a long time, especially after returning from injury,” Pinturault emphasized in the place where he grew up and where his family works in the hotel industry. “I knew at the beginning of the season that it would be my last, but I didn’t want to say it too early.”

Pinturault celebrated his last World Cup victory in Lenzerheide in March 2021. More recently, the former rival of Marcel Hirscher has been plagued by injuries. In January 2024, he suffered a torn cruciate ligament, and almost exactly a year later, he sustained another serious knee injury in Kitzbühel. This season, he has only competed in the giant slalom.
