All against Odermatt: The Swiss opens the Gran Risa

And who, if not Marco Odermatt, should have the great honor of opening the classic on the Gran Risa. He leads the overall World Cup and the giant slalom rankings and was the dominator last season. Tomorrow at 10.00 a.m. the Swiss wants to hit the snow for the first time - as befits the currently best skier. The 25-year-old feels completely at home on the technically demanding piste and can look back on a victory and a second place in Alta Badia last winter.

Odermatt will be the hunted on Sunday, but there are many who would love to challenge him for victory in Alta Badia. Lucas Braathen (start number 2) from Norway and the Slovenian Zan Kranjec (start number 4) have both already made it to the podium this season and are each aiming for the last big step up to the top spot on the podium. Here the leader of the overall World Cup will probably have to tremble for the first time.

The one who stopped Odermatt from a double victory a year ago was Henrik Kristoffersen. Third place at the season opener in Sölden and fifth place in Val d'Isere. Kristoffersen is at the front, but the overwhelming Odermatt always misses those darned tenths. The Norwegian starts the Gran Risa with start number 6.

In addition to Odermatt and Kristoffersen, Alexis Pinturault was the last winner of Alta Badia (2020). But the Frenchman is still waiting for a top 10 placement in the giant slalom this year and will probably not have much of a say in the fight for victory. He was given starting number 5.

Home fans have to be patient The local fans will have to be patient until a South Tyrolean can be seen in the starting house. Simon Maurberger starts off. He wears starting number 28 and, after finishing 13th in Val d'Isere, can plunge down the Gran Risa with a good deal of self-confidence. Riccardo Tonetti follows with starting number 53, Alex Vinatzer starts in 61st place and Tobias Kastlunger completes the four South Tyroleans with number 66.

Otherwise, Luca de Aliprandini starts with number 14 for the Azzurri, followed by Giovanni Borsotti with 25. Filippo Della Vite starts with number 31, Giovanni Franzoni with 54 and Tommaso Sala with 63.
