Thomas Tumler has experienced a stark contrast in recent months. The Swiss giant slalom specialist had the best winter of his life, won his first World Cup race, and was crowned runner-up at the World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. On the other hand, the 35-year-old has been going through an incredibly difficult time personally.
In May 2024, Tumler was still on cloud nine when he married his long-time girlfriend Svenja. But just seven months after the wedding, the marriage ended. Now Tumler has revealed how deeply the separation has affected him. "She told me she no longer has feelings. That came out of nowhere," the ski star told Swiss magazines.

Tumler was devastated and, by his own account, lost ten kilograms in weight. "I hid. Sometimes I just lay in bed and cried all day. I pulled myself together for the races," said the Graubünden native. The physical consequences of this crisis were obvious, and so Tumler had to change his ski boots before the World Championship giant slalom because his old ones were too hard. He simply lacked the strength to push through them properly. Nevertheless, the Swiss skier won the silver medal.

He says he was able to enjoy his successes. But after the season, everything caught up with him. "In the middle of a ski tour, I collapsed and cried in the snow. I was a happy runner-up in the World Championships – and then, whoosh! That was terrible." A few months have passed since then, and he's feeling well again. Tumler wants to attack again next season.
