What kind of fairy tale would that have been? Florian Schieder, who was seriously injured during the World Cup downhill two years ago in Cortina, was able to flirt with a medal for some time on Sunday in the French Alps. The Castelrotto driver started the race with start number 1 and showed a strong ride in bright sunshine. Schieder only made a small mistake in the lower part of the route.

In the end, Schieder finished seventh. For the 27-year-old, it is the second best result ever in the elite class - after his surprising second place in Kitzbühel. Schieder was 20 hundredths of a second behind bronze winner Cameron Alexander on Sunday. The 25-year-old Canadian pushed his compatriot James Crawford off the podium with start number 19 and immediately grabbed a medal in his first World Championship race.

Dominik Paris also showed a solid ride just three days after his Super-G crash. Despite a few small blunders, the Ultner was moving quickly. At the finish he was 24 hundredths short of his third World Championship medal. That meant eighth place.

The Odermatt Redemption But the big stage at the World Cup downhill belonged to Marco Odermatt. After his fourth place in the Super-G, the Swiss superstar was under enormous pressure on Sunday. The 25-year-old has once again proven that he can handle this. Without ever having won a World Cup downhill before, he was crowned world champion in this discipline on Sunday.

Odermatt has already won everything there is to win. Now “Odi” can not only call himself the overall World Cup winner and Olympic champion, but also world champion. Odermatt showed a perfect ride on the descent without a single wobble and distanced himself from his main rival Aleksander Aamodt Kilde by almost half a second. The Norwegian has to wait for his first world title. As in the Super-G, he also won the silver medal in the downhill.

There will be a rest day on Monday at the Alpine Ski World Championships in France. The team event continues on Tuesday.
