Half a year later: Ski ace still in a wheelchair

Czech ski racer Tereza Nova is still fighting to return to a normal life six months after her devastating training crash in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

The National Ski Association's endowment fund has now launched a fundraising campaign to raise additional funds for the 27-year-old's treatment. State support will end in September, according to a statement. Nova is currently still wheelchair-bound.

Nova fell on the Kandahar slope in January. The 2022 Olympic participant suffered severe traumatic brain injury with bleeding, a carotid artery injury, and a fractured eye socket. She was in a coma for weeks, underwent multiple surgeries, and was brought back home from the Murnau Trauma Clinic after about a month. She is currently undergoing rehabilitation and hopes not only to walk again but even to ski again someday.

One second can change your life

The mother speaks of the "toughest race of her life," which her daughter is competing in, only this time not on the slopes. "She has already reached many important milestones, but a large part of the journey still lies ahead of her." Skiing is "the most beautiful sport, but at the same time, it can sometimes be very cruel," explained association president David Travnicek. "It only takes a second to change a life. Such a second happened to one of us earlier this year." Nova remains part of the family. It is therefore natural that the association supports the athlete.
