S+A myth turns 50: The “Valanga Azzurra”

It's been a little over a month, but the chapter in ski history that was written on January 7th, 1974 is timeless: It was at the World Cup giant slalom in Berchtesgaden, where 5 athletes from the Italian ski team - including 3 South Tyroleans - competed placed in the first 5 places. The myth of the “Valanga Azzurra”, the azure avalanche, was born.

At the beginning of the 1970s, the Italian men's national team was the most successful ski team in the world: led by “Campionissimo” Gustav Thöni, who won the overall World Cup in 1971, 1972 and 1973, several athletes regularly placed in the top 10. But what happened on January 7, 1974 was almost unbelievable.
