Emotional words: Swiss ski star mourns after victory

Camille Rast's first giant slalom victory was a very emotional one. Afterwards, she gave a moving interview.

The gesture was unmistakable. When Camille Rast crossed the finish line in Kranjska Gora on Saturday and realized, that this was her first giant slalom victory, The Swiss woman patted her left upper arm several times. There she wore a black mourning band. The reason why was clear to everyone in Kranjska Gora.


The devastating fire in Crans-Montana has deeply shaken the Swiss sporting world. This is especially true for Camille Rast, who lives in Sion, only about a half-hour drive from the scene of the tragedy. The slalom world champion later said in her post-race interview: "Something terrible has happened in my home country; my thoughts are with all the affected families. This weekend, we're racing for them."

These are strong words from the 26-year-old, who added in an interview with SRF: "It was difficult to race after the disaster in Crans-Montana. I hope I was able to bring a smile to a few faces with this victory." The win in Kranjska Gora was therefore a very emotional occasion for Camille Rast.

In Crans-Montana, a devastating fire at the Le Constellation bar on New Year's Eve killed around 40 people and injured more than 100 others, some seriously. The incident has caused widespread shock internationally. also in the world of sports.
