European Cup Sarntal: Second Super-G canceled

After the exciting Super-G on Thursday, which the “Azzurra” Asja Zenere won in very good conditions, the weather thwarted the organizers’ plans on Friday.

Rain and fog led to the cancellation of the second planned speed race on the Schöneben slope - primarily to protect the athletes from possible injuries. After the jury inspection at 8 a.m., the 69 registered racers from ten different nations didn't have to wait long for a decision. The cancellation was announced immediately after arriving in the finish area at the valley station in Reinswald.

Rain had softened the runway and banks of fog were constantly moving over the race track, which is why air rescue would not have been guaranteed. The teams then immediately began their journey home.

“It was out of the question to hold a race today. The slope was soft and this could have led to serious injuries. The decision was made accordingly quickly. Of course, we as organizers are disappointed that we couldn't hold the second Super-G. But the safety of the athletes always comes first,” said Luis Hofer, coordinator of the European Cup races in Reinswald.
