"Extremely annoying": Ski star has to end season

Ski racer Luis Vogt's season has ended prematurely due to injury.

The 24-year-old suffered a severe sprain of the cruciate ligament in his right knee during the final training session for the home World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, as announced by the German Ski Association. Surgery is not necessary, but the injury will require immobilization with a brace.

The famous Kandahar slope will host the first men's alpine races after the Winter Olympics this weekend: a downhill on Saturday and a Super-G on Sunday (both at 11:15 am).

narrowly missed the Olympics

“I lost my position at the gate during training today at the entrance to the Eishang slope. This pushed me backwards. At the finish, I felt a dull pain in my right knee,” said Vogt. The setback was “extremely bitter and annoying,” as he had been really looking forward to the home event. But it could have been worse, the athlete from SC Garmisch added.

Vogt finished eighth in the legendary downhill race in Kitzbühel at the end of January – but the result came too late for an Olympic nomination. The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) subsequently attempted to obtain a special exemption to allow the athlete to compete in Italy. This was rejected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
