Finn leaves intensive care after his horrific fall

Horrific scenes unfolded during the final downhill training run in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Friday: Finnish skier Elian Lehto lost control, crashed heavily, and had to be airlifted to hospital. The 25-year-old has now spoken out about the incident on social media.

Finnish skier Elian Lehto left intensive care on Saturday, one day after his crash during the final training run for the World Cup downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The skier gave the all-clear via Instagram.

“I was lucky and didn’t injure my head too badly,” the 25-year-old wrote. “My chest took the worst of it, causing my left lung to collapse, but I was discharged from intensive care today.”

Fall during final training

Lehto lost control in the Hölle section of the course on Friday and crashed into the safety netting. The Finnish federation had already announced afterwards that Lehto was conscious and responsive.
