Florian Schieder pulls the ripcord

Florian Schieder will no longer be on skis this winter, that much is certain. The downhill skier from Castelrotto has drawn a line under his World Cup season.

The past few months have been an emotional ups and downs for Florian Schieder. He injured his knee on the Wengen downhill run, but still took part in the races in Kitzbühel and, in second place, raced onto the World Cup podium for the second time in his career. But just days later it was clear: things couldn't go on like this. Examinations revealed meniscus and cartilage damage in the right knee. The 28-year-old reduced his remaining season program to a minimum, but hoped to start at the season finale in Saalbach.

Now Schieder, who is in eleventh place in the Downhill World Cup, has definitely pulled the ripcord. “Unfortunately I have to undergo knee surgery on Friday. I'm not happy to end the season this way, but I hope everything turns out positively and I can start rehab soon," the speed specialist wrote on Instagram.

This means that the World Cup final for Alpine ski racers in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, the 2025 World Cup venue, will take place from March 16th to 24th without a referee.
