Goggia races on the edge towards the crystal ball.

Sofia Goggia secured the small crystal globe in the Super-G on Sunday. In the battle for the overall World Cup title, Emma Aicher further reduced Mikaela Shiffrin's lead.

Sofia Goggia felt it immediately: shortly after crossing the finish line, the Italian speed queen covered her face with her hands, overwhelmed by emotion, and needed a moment to compose herself. She had undercut the best time of the then-leader Kira Weidle-Winkelmann by an incredible 0,60 seconds, thus putting herself in a strong position in the battle for the small crystal globe with Alice Robinson – and her instincts would prove correct.

While the 33-year-old celebrated her 29th World Cup victory, her New Zealand rival made too many mistakes at the decisive moment (+2,41 seconds). Thus, after four downhill crystal globes, Goggia now also secured the trophy for best athlete in the Super-G for the first time in her illustrious career. She finished with 549 points, followed by Robinson (386) and Emma Aicher (354).

The path to this coronation was symbolic: especially in the middle section, the Bergamasque was pushing herself to the limit. All or nothing – in the far north, Goggia's characteristically risky plan worked.

Aicher is catching up to Shiffrin in the overall World Cup standings

Second place in Kvitfjell ultimately went to Switzerland's Corinne Suter (+0,32), while Weidle-Winkelmann finished third (+0,60). The 30-year-old German finished just one hundredth of a second ahead of her teammate Aicher (4th/+0,61), unintentionally blocking her from the showdown for the overall World Cup title.

Mikaela Shiffrin had a 95-point lead over Aicher before the Super-G. That one hundredth of a second cost the German all-rounder ten points. At least Shiffrin finished 22nd on Sunday, scoring no points (+2,78). Thus, the gap between the two is 45 points.

The penultimate duel between Aicher and Shiffrin is already scheduled for Tuesday. The American is the overwhelming favorite in the slalom race (starting at 10:30 a.m.). SportNews(Live ticker). The last World Cup of the season, the giant slalom, takes place the following day.
