Gut-Behrami is the queen of Sölden

Lra Gut-Behrami, Federica Brignone and Petra Vlhova were the fastest at the women's World Cup opener in Sölden. The Swiss woman in particular shone brightly in the Austrian ski capital. After fourth place in the first round, the experienced athlete conjured up a lightning-fast run in the snow and left the entire competition behind. The 32-year-old won the opening race in Sölden for the third time and celebrated her 38th World Cup victory, the sixth in giant slalom.

In the end the game in the giant slalom was extremely close. Lara Gut-Behrami sat panting at the finish line and looked up the slope in Sölden with a smile. The start was already a success for her and she was assured of a place on the podium. But Federica Brignone was in the starting line with a big lead over her Swiss competitor, but then, like Petra Vlhova and Sara Hector, she was no match for Gut-Behrami's journey. The hundredths of a second continued to eat away at the Azzurra's lead until, after the steep slope, the interim time was displayed in red. Even the strong final section wasn't enough for the Italian. She remained just 0,02 seconds behind Gut-Behrami and had to settle for second place.

Petra Vlhova (+0,14 seconds) from the Czech Republic came third, beating out Sara Hector (4th place/+1,10 seconds) and Marta Bassino (5th place/+1,19 seconds) in the race for the last podium place gained a few positions after an outstanding second run. Mikaela Shiffrin was also no match for today's three top runners and finished her season opener in sixth place (+1,40 seconds).

The heavily rotating course demanded everything from the runners and revealed who took summer training seriously. Especially in the last few gates, one or two runners missed important hundredths, which quickly meant some lost positions. It continues on Sunday as soon as the men step onto the giant slalom slope in Sölden (10 a.m.).
