"Should have seen the other one": Ski ace takes fall with humor

The World Cup downhill race in Crans-Montana was overshadowed by the serious crashes of Lindsey Vonn and Marte Monsen. The latter took to social media the following day, showing her injuries and displaying a sense of humor.

Difficult weather and slope conditions hampered the athletes on Friday. After Nina Ortlieb, wearing bib number 1, failed to finish, Monsen also crashed into the safety netting. The 26-year-old lost her helmet in the hard impact and had to be transported away by ambulance. The Norwegian is doing well, considering the circumstances, as she announced on social media on Saturday.

“Tested the network yesterday, wouldn’t recommend it,” Monsen wrote. “I’m currently dealing with a concussion and need to rest before I can reply to everyone. Now I’m going home for further tests on my right knee to determine when I can ride again.” She also posted a picture of her scrapes and commented, “You should have seen the other one.”

Time is running out

Given her injuries, a start at the Cortina d'Ampezzo Olympics seems unlikely, especially since the first downhill training run is scheduled for next Thursday on the Olimpia delle Tofane. All the more bitter: for Monsen, who has developed from a giant slalom skier to a speed specialist, it would have been her first Winter Games.

Marte Monsen can laugh again.

Monsen is in the best form of her life this year: She finished ninth in both the downhill races in Tarvisio and St. Moritz. Along with Kajsa Vickhoff Lie, she is the only Norwegian speed skier nominated for the Olympics.
