It's an exciting time in South Tyrolean skiing. In recent days, several local aces have said goodbye to the skiing world. Manuel Ploner, Vivien Insam, Vera Tschurtschenthaler – they all announced their retirement from their beloved sport with heavy hearts. Now another athlete joins them: slalom skier Petra Unterholzner is ending her career at the age of 25.
"Peti is out," the Ulten native wrote on Instagram alongside a video featuring the best scenes of her career. "Words cannot describe how grateful I am for these moments and these memories," Unterholzner said emotionally.
The slalom specialist didn't make it into the World Cup, but she has 37 starts in the European Cup – the second-highest racing series – to her name, making it into the top 20 several times. Unterholzner's greatest success, however, came at the 2022 Italian Championships: Back then, she surprisingly won the gold medal, even leaving a few World Cup-proven skiers behind.
Unterholzner hasn't been part of the national team for several years and has had to fight her way through life on her own. Now the skiing journey of the Ulten native, who has competed in every FIS race this year, is coming to an end.
